Zendaya drops out of Aaliyah movie without giving a solid reason. Disney star Zendaya Coleman is dropping out of a controversial Aaliyah biopic that was announced earlier this month. Coleman who is 17 was supposed to portray R&B music icon Aaliyah Dana Haughton who died in 2001 at age 22.
Less than ten days ago, the young artist was on social media talking about her joy and pride to be part of this project. It all changed on Sunday when she put out a statement telling the world that she was no longer associated with the upcoming Lifetime Aaliyah TV movie.
Coleman tweeted:
“Aaliyah has always been a source of inspiration to Zendaya. She was honored to portray her and pay tribute to her. If she is going to do it, she wants to do it right.”
Lifetime explained in a statement that work on the Aaliyah: Princess of R&B film is currently on pause, it read:
“We are sad Zendaya will no longer portray Aaliyah. Production is currently on hold.”
Zendaya who appeared at Sunday’s 2014 BET Awards has not giving a real reason or explanation for her move but inside sources claim that the TV movie always felt rushed and the project was never on real solid ground.
According to rumors, the project faces numerous obstacles including Aaliyah’s family opposition and fans’ cold reaction to the news. Additionally the network was having trouble getting rights to the music legend’s catalog.
Personalities like Keshia Chante and Teyana Taylor reportedly turned down the role because they did not want to clash with the family. Rihanna has also been linked to the part but it all seems in shamble right now.
The singer’s family wants Aaliyah’s story told via a bigger medium and potentially with actors and stars that are already big in the entertainment industry.
Although Aaliyah’s relatives claim publicly that they have nothing against Zendaya Coleman, she just did not fit their high standards.
