Xphiles, mark your calendars, on January 24, 2016, The X-Files or The X-Files Miniseries will premiere on FOX. The X-Files Miniseries is a continuation of the hit and cult science fiction horror drama television series, The X-Files, which wrapped up in 2002. To wet fans’ appetites, creator and writer Chris Carter has unveiled a 20-minute preview of one of the most anticipated 2016 series.
The video opens with Gillian Anderson, who plays Dana Scully explaining it will be astonishing to have the famous soundtrack, the cross beams of light coming out of darkness, and the familiar faces back on the little screen.
Director/writer Darin Morgan also made an appearance in the preview where he explained that the writers find it fascinating to write about a post-September 11 world – where more and more people believe in conspiracy theories because of drones flying over the US, and the NSA that may or not be listening to your private phone calls.
According to Morgan, when fans look back at the old episodes of The X-Files they have to admit that Scully and Mulder were right to warn them about many things.
Joel McHale will take on the role of Tad O’Malley, a conservative Internet news anchor, who is an ally of Mulder’s and wants to rattle the world by proving his theories on 911 and his beliefs that the government is hiding aliens, and there are even human-alien hybrids on Earth.
McHale explained that he has always been a great fan of the series, and he felt honored to have gotten the role. Mitch Pileggi reprises his role as Walter Skinner, an assistant director, who has been with the FBI for over 20 years. Talking to the fans, Pileggi revealed that he was initially brought in to be a road block to Scully and Mulder’s plans, but after being close to the duo, he became their champion.
The actor said that working with David Duchovny and Anderson was like getting “back on a bike.” The writers revealed that they would satisfy the fans’ need for more monsters and their love for mythologies. The miniseries will focus in an honest way on the relationship between Scully and Mulder, and will investigate how time has been against the pair. Anderson claimed there is a “similar dynamic between the characters now and in the past – great intimacy, an appreciation that always ends with frustration.”
Chris Carter unveiled a sneak peek of an upcoming episode where the duo finally speaks about their son. It was revealed that they put up the baby for adoption for his own safety, and they are feeling guilty about the decision. Anderson’s character said:
“I miss every single year of his life, I almost hate myself for not having the courage to stand by him.”
Anderson later shared:
“It brought profound questions about life, family abandonment and unanswered questions.”
Duchovny confirmed that among the episodes there will be few stand-alone episodes, but there will always be a bit of the main characters’ story. Major spoiler:
William B. Davis will be back as The Smoking Man, a former government official, and arch-nemesis of Mulder and Scully, who worked to cover up the truth of the existence of aliens and their plan to colonize the Earth.
The Smoking Man, who survived certain death in the series finale, is still Mulder’s enemy, but he feels that he needs him according to Davis.
