A woman from Florida by the name of Melissa Dawn Sellers set her roommate on fire after fighting over spaghetti and meatballs. Sellers used polish remover to seriously burn Carlos Ortiz Jr. It is reported that the roommates were drunk during the heated argument.
On Wednesday at around 2 AM, Melissa Dawn Sellers and her roommate Carlos Ortiz Jr., who were both intoxicated got into a fight. During the heated argument, Ortiz made the horrible mistake of throwing a plate of spaghetti and meatballs that belonged to Sellers.
33-year-old Melissa Dawn Sellers, was so angry that her meal was dumped that she picked up a bottle of polish remover, poured it over Carlos Ortiz Jr., 42, and set him on fire with either a lighter, or a lit cigarette. Ines Causevic, who is a friend of Ortiz and who witnessed the shocking incident, revealed:
“She was setting little objects on fire, then that turned into pouring nail polish remover all over him, and then all of a sudden, the lighter sparked and he lit on fire.”
Causevic quickly poured water over Ortiz’s shirt, which was on fire and rapidly took him to the Tampa General Hospital. The man is currently in critical condition after suffering severe burns on his face, chest and shoulders. Clearwater Police’s Rob Shaw gave more details about the fight:
“There was some type of disagreement between these two people. They were both intoxicated, they began arguing. We’re not sure what the altercation was over. But during the process of the argument, she doused him with nail polish remover and either flicked a cigarette or lit a lighter to set him on fire.”
According to neighbors, Sellers was having a difficult time since getting fired from Walmart and was entangled in several legal issues.
Sellers appeared at the Pinellas County court on Wednesday afternoon, where she told the judge that it was all a mix-up. Sellers was charged with aggravated battery and is being held at Pinellas County Jail on $10,000 bond.
