Waffle House Belgian gamble is a nice PR move. An American eatery is asking that Belgian waffle be boycotted – because real patriots who are supporting Team USA in the match against Belgium should not eat the fancy European pastry, have a pancake instead. Waffle House has jokingly asked that Americans stay away from the breakfast food as they watch America battle or should we say beat, squash, eliminate Belgium in the 2014 World Cup in Brazil in few hours. While we are at it do not touch any Brussels sprout on Tuesday or else your nationality will be revoked.
On Monday, Waffle House Inc posted a tweet calling on all real Americans to put down that Belgian waffle ahead of the United States big match against Belgium’s Red Devils for a spot in the quarter finals during this year’s World Cup in Brazil. The restaurant chain tweeted:
We don’t believe in Belgium waffles.
The statement was inspired by the U.S. team supporters’ now famous chant “I believe that we will win” which is inspired by R. Kelly classic inspirational track “I Believe I can Fly.”
While this is a funny way to show their support to the American soccer players, the tweet calling the boycott is also good business.
The Southern eatery gets its name in the media and enjoys lots of free publicity.
There is also an opportunity for the company to bank on this little joke.
The 1700 Waffle House restaurants all over America do not sell Belgian waffle, they only serve American-style waffles.
So expect the fast food giant to sell more American-style waffles on Tuesday than usual.
