Authorities detained a nurse from the United Kingdom earlier this month as she is the primary suspect for taking the lives of eight infants and attempting to kill six more.
The alleged series of murders took place at Countess of Chester Hospital in Chester, England, and Lucy Letby is suspected of being responsible for all them.
Even though the name of the 28-year-old nurse was not initially released to the public by authorities, the media quickly found out who the alleged killer is.
News about taking Letby into custody took most of her colleagues and closest friends by surprise, as everyone who knew her claimed that she had proven to be a kind and diligent person when it came to her work.
The nurse also took part in a fundraising campaign that aimed to raise enough money for a new neonatal unit at the hospital, which could give more privacy to patients.
The investigation that led to Letby’s arrest started back in May 2017 when the doctors at the hospital noticed an unusual increase in the mortality rate among infants.
All death cases were unexplainable to medics until interference by the police made it clear that the causes of death for the premature babies might be of a non-natural character.
The investigation of the mysterious case first started by examining the cause of death for eight of the victims, but it later expanded to a total of 17 dead babies and 15 who survived, albeit in poor health.
Letby was released after two days of intense interrogation by authorities.
Cheshire police have put out a statement after the release; it read: “This is an extremely difficult time for all the families. We continue to recognize that this investigation has a huge impact on all of the families, staff, and patients at the hospital as well as members of the public.”
It continued: “Parents of all the babies continue to be kept fully updated and are being supported throughout the process by specially trained officers.”
It is unclear where the case is headed because authorities have still not named the suspect officially.
