FX’s TV show, The Comedians, starring Billy Crystal and Josh Gad has been cancelled after one season and 13 episodes.
The Comedians, an FX TV show produced by Larry Charles (Borat and Seinfeld), that debuted on April 9 to much fanfare will not get renewed.
The Comedians, a TV show that was based on a Swedish program called Ulveson And Herngren, brought together two talented and well-liked actors – Billy Crystal and Josh Gad. The combination was not enough to convince viewers and critics, who gave it so-so grades.
Crystal’s fans had a lot of hope for the comedy series since it was the first TV project for the legendary comedian in over 30 years. ABC’s TV series Soap, which ran from 1977 into 1981, turned the Parental Guidance actor into a real star.
Gad’s supporters were also hoping that The Comedians would become a success, the 34-year-old actor saw his last TV series, 1600 Penn, get cancelled after 13 episodes by NBC. Mr. Gad also functioned as co-creator and executive producer on the single-camera series.
FX’s TV show, The Comedians, was never able to draw more than one million viewers for an episode. It also failed to land an Emmy nomination, this might have been the straw that broke the camel’s back. The network did not even bother to release a statement about the cancellation. Instead, it was Executive Producer Ben Wexler, who broke the news on Twitter. Wexler wrote on Thursday:
#TheComedians is cancelled at FX. I could not be more proud of the work we all did.
Gad took to the same site to thank fans for their support. He Tweeted:
Thank you all for your kind words re: #TheComedians. It was only one season. But in the pantheon of one season shows I’ve done, it was a gem.
Crystal also addressed the cancellation on his official Twitter account. He shared:
To fans of The Comedians thanks for your support. I am so proud of the work we did and of all the people we did it with. #don’tgetit.
Fans have expressed their disappointment in FX for cancelling their favorite TV show. The Comedians centered on fictional versions of Crystal and Gad, who are forced to work together.
What are your thoughts on The Comedians getting cancelled?
@BillyCrystal Once again, network impatience intervenes & cuts a brilliant show I looked forward to every week. Shameful. #TheComedians

@jaymohr37 It was perfect. So many great shows go by the wayside while complete turds keep getting renewed. Sad. #TheComedians

Sending letters to @netflix, @hulu, @yahooscreen and @PapaJohns to see if any of them will pick up #TheComedians for a much-needed Season 2.
