Shonda Rhimes has added another great accomplishment to her résumé – she shed over 127 pounds in one year. In her new memoir, Rhimes gave a very long list of advice that can help people be the better version of themselves.
Shonda Rhimes, the author of the new self-help book/memoir, Year of Yes: How to Dance it Out, Stand in the Sun, and Be Your Own Person, is opening up more than ever before about her life and is sharing valuable life lessons that will help her readers.
Rhimes, who is famous for writing hit shows like Grey’s Anatomy, Private Practice and Scandal looked like she had it all together, but in her new book she revealed that she was unhappy, hooked on Xanax, battling body issues, and faced humiliations. Moreover, her wealth destroyed some of her relationships, and she feared a laundry list of things.
However, at 45, after having three beautiful children, she decided to tackle her problems one by one and say yes to almost every invitation life threw at her. The first thing she tackled was her health – between 2014 and 2015, she lost 127 pounds after an embarrassing incident on a plane. The television producer and writer shared:
“I got on an airplane. I was going to New York from L.A. and it was like a first class seat. The Year Of Yes.” “I took off my shoes, I got out my book, I went to buckle the seat belt and it wouldn’t buckle. I thought to myself, ‘Well, something’s wrong with the seat belt. It’s broken.’ It wasn’t the seat belt; it was me. And I thought, ‘Well, I can get a seat belt extender…or I could die and not have a seat belt extender and maybe the plane will crash or I fly outta my seat when we take off. And I decided that I would risk it and just flying outta my seat because I wasn’t going to say anything.”
The “Year of Yes” author said she was also motivated by her family to get and stay healthy. She revealed:
“I have a 3-year-old and a 13-year-old and a 2-year-old, and I wanted to be around for them, be healthy. I’m going to fall over because I don’t feel good.”
Rhimes, who was featured in Time magazine’s 100 People Who Help Shape The World list, has a Master of Fine Arts degree from the USC School of Cinematic Arts and is the queen of ABC’s Thursday night lineup. Rhimes said she realized that she had done so many things, so losing weight was not impossible to her. She shared:
“I work really hard in every other area of my life. Why wouldn’t I throw myself into being healthy and losing weight?”
As stated above, Rhimes not only shared her story with the readers, she provides them with a collection of motivational talks that can help improve their lives. Rhimes insisted:
“Get to know yourself. That’s the first step to finding your spotlight. When I started to try to lose weight and get healthier, I decided to eat only things I craved enough to say yes to. This is crazy, but I had no idea what they were. I hadn’t paid attention to what made me happy. Turns out, I’m obsessed with tomato soup.”
One of the things Shonda Rhimes started to say yes to were TV interviews, check out few below.
