A Sanderson Farms recall due to contamination with metal shavings implies that over 500,000 pounds of chicken will be destroyed. The company announced the recall after discovering that one of their facilities in Mississippi had produced poultry containing metal shavings that originated from an ice-making machine.
Chicken lovers should start trying tofu or fish, another Sanderson Farms recall has been announced.
On Thursday, September 24, Sanderson Farms in a press release via the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS), explained that it was voluntarily pulling over half a million pounds of chicken from the shelves due to a strange contamination of metal.
The company estimates that a total of 554,090 pounds of poultry products will have to be destroyed, which is very little because it produces 9.375 million chickens – per week. That is a lot chicken.
According to the statement, the recall is taking place because an employee of Sanderson Farms contacted headquarters after discovering metal shavings in chicken that came from a facility in Hazlehurst, Mississippi.
An investigation into the matter rapidly revealed that the contamination resulted “from a malfunction with an ice-making machine during production.” Sanderson Farms, one of the largest poultry producers in the United States, was pleased to announce that thus far no one has fallen sick or suffered injuries because of the pieces of metal.
The packaging that are subjected to the recall have the number “EST. P-247” inside, the USDA mark of inspection, and were produced between September 17 and 18, 2015. The recall concerns the following products:
70-lb. cases containing “YOUNG CHICKEN PARTS JUMBO BONELESS SKINLESS BREAST FILLETS WITH RIB MEAT” with case code 45017.
70-lb. cases containing “YOUNG CHICKEN PARTS JUMBO CLIPPED TENDERLOINS” with case code 45092.
70-lb. cases containing “YOUNG CHICKEN PARTS JUMBO BONELESS SKINLESS BREAST BUTTERFLIES WITH RIB MEAT” with case code 45015.
70-lb. cases and 1800-lb. combos containing “FRESH YOUNG CHICKEN PARTS BREAST FRAMES” with case code 45969.
The company is requesting that consumers, who have any of the chicken products listed above, either dispose of them immediately or return them to the place of purchase for a full refund. With so many chicken recalls, some people are looking for tofu and beans as substitutes.
Here are few recipes inspired by tofu that is known to lock in all flavors that it is cooked with and is filled with protein and heart-healthy fats.
Hash Browns with Italian-Seasoned Tofu:
