Rachel Dolezal, the white woman, who became infamous in 2015 for claiming that she is black, is now jobless and could become homeless in the upcoming weeks.
Dolezal, 39, was the head of the NAACP chapter in Spokane, Washington when it was revealed that she had misled people about her racial identity.
She spent a significant amount of time and energy building a persona as a black woman, something that has puzzled her parents – Lawrence Dolezal and Ruthanne Dolezal – who came out in the media and slammed their daughter for trying to pass as black.
The former activist and proud bisexual, who was once married to an African-American man named Kevin Moore, got in trouble in the first place after telling local authorities that she was a victim of nine hate crimes. The ensuing investigation brought her extra scrutiny that eventually contributed to her downfall.
Dolezal’s story went viral in the summer of 2015 sparking a real debate about racial identity in America.
For some people, her behavior was nothing more than cultural appropriation, something that some members of the African-American community have been talking about for quite some time.
On the other side, Dolezal’s supporters insist that her situation is no different from someone like transgender activist Caitlyn Jenner.
If gender can be fluid, why can’t it be the same thing for race and cultural identity?
The debate was never settled, and Dolezal has lost everything in the meantime. Her numerous television appearances did not help in landing another job.
The only offers she was able to get are in the adult industry and reality TV. Dolezal does not want to go on these routes, but money is getting tight.
The controversial public figure has changed her name but says people still recognize her. It was not even possible to work at a supermarket, she claims.
A memoir titled “Full Color” found a publisher after a very long search. It will be released on March 28.
