Omar Sy has landed a unique movie deal with streaming giant Netflix. The collaboration is the first of its kind for a French actor.
Omar Sy reconnects with Louis Leterrier for new Netflix movie
At 43, Sy is set to executive produce and star in several films for the company in the upcoming years. The first project, Tour de Force (Tower of Strength), will premiere in 2022.
Laurent Lafitte, Sy’s co-star in De l’autre côté du périph (On the Other Side of the Tracks), will join the casting.
The action-comedy will reunite Sy with his Lupin director, Louis Leterrier. Sy has been the most popular actor in France for close to ten years after the success of The Intouchables.
Omar Sy changes status after Lupin‘s success
However, he only received international recognition when Lupin became a massive hit on Netflix. Sy moved to Los Angeles in 2012 to make a mark in Hollywood.
He has appeared in The Call of the Wild with Harrison Ford and Jurassic World. He is expected to be in Jurassic World: Dominion that will be released in June 2022.
Omar Sy lauds Netflix as a partner
Sy’s original films for Netflix will be produced through his company in Paris and Los Angeles. The Transformers: The Last Knight and Inferno actor told Variety the following about the Netflix deal: “I have experienced Netflix’s collaboration with artists and their passion to bring unique and diverse stories to homes all over the world.”
He continued: “I am very happy to have the opportunity to extend the relationship and look forward to this next step of our journey together.”
Gaelle Mareschi, a well-respected film producer and Netflix France director of international original film, also reacted in a statement where she said: “We have been lucky enough to have worked closely with Omar for a number of years and are excited to now expand our partnership further to bring his creative vision to our global audiences. We look forward to working together with Omar and his team as he grows as a producer and brings more unique stories and voices to Netflix.”
Sy joins The Crown star Vanessa Kirby in the Netflix roster of talents with multi-year feature film deal. Netflix is hard to work to expand its horizons and reach new markets.
The deal with Sy has the potential to accomplish this goal. The French market also includes some countries in Africa.
Sy, who is a father of five, is open to the idea of working on a new season of Lupin.
