President Barack Obama and Mexican leader Enrique Peña Nieto meet, and Donald Trump’s name comes up. During the meeting in Washington, Nieto, the president of Mexico, who once compared Trump to Adolf Hitler, surprised reporters by remaining politically correct and saying that he will respect the democratic process in the U.S.
Barack Obama and Enrique Peña Nieto meet in Washington and are quizzed about Donald Trump.
On Friday, the 57th President of Mexico, Peña Nieto sat down with President Obama to mainly talk about the partnership between the two countries, the economy, climate change, and security but failed to touch upon the drug cartel.
During the press conference, which took place just hours after Trump formally accepted the Republican nomination for president, the two leaders were questioned on the controversial billionaire. Asked to share his thought on the Republican politician, Peña Nieto, who once said that the mogul had similarities with Adolf Hitler and Benito Mussolini, became coy and was extremely politically correct. He stated:
“The Mexican government respects the democratic process in the U.S. We will not get involved, we will not give our opinion, we will not set any type of position because at the end of the day it is the American people who have to decide who the next president will be,” Nieto said. “And the Mexican government will work in a constructive manner with whomever is elected.”
In the past, Mr. Peña Nieto made it clear that Mexico will not be paying for the wall that Trump has been talking about. Trump, who launched his campaign by saying that Mexicans are killers and rapists, has shared on countless occasions that he will build a “big and beautiful” wall to keep them out, and Mexico will handle the bill.”
POTUS was asked to react to Trump’s speech, he said he did not watch the convention, but read about it. He said:
“This idea that America is somehow on the verge of collapse — this vision of violence and chaos everywhere doesn’t really jibe with the experience of most people. We are not going to make good decisions based on fears that don’t have a basis in fact.”
Obama added:
“The Republicans had an opportunity this week to share their vision with the country and emphasize those issues they thought were important. I’m going to let the American people judge how persuasive their arguments were.”
Obama took the opportunity to tell Trump why he will need more than a wall to resolve the immigration debacle. He shared:
“The benefit of a cooperative Mexico — and by the way, a Mexico that has a healthy economy, a Mexico that can help us build stability and security in Central America — that’s going to do a lot more to solve any migration crisis than a wall,”
This is Mr. Peña Nieto’s second official visit to Washington.
