Naomi Watts made headlines at the SAG Awards, not for her Burberry dress, but for her tears. Watts became very emotional listening to the cast of Spotlight, (a film about the Boston Catholic priest sex abuse scandal), on stage as they talked about the powerful project.
On Saturday, Naomi Watts attended the Screen Actors Guild Awards (SAG Awards) in a stunning blue and black Burberry dress, Jimmy Choo shoes, a Judith Leiber bag, and Bulgari jewels. The Adore actress was accompanied by longtime partner Liev Schreiber, who looked very handsome in a black suit.
Miss Watts, who was not nominated for any award, was seen crying at the ceremony because of the cast of Spotlight, which includes Schreiber. Spotlight, which won Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture, is a biographical film directed by Tom McCarthy and written by McCarthy and Josh Singer.
The movie follows The Boston Globe‘s “Spotlight” team and its investigation into cases of child sex abuse in the Boston area by hundreds of Roman Catholic Priests. As the stars of Spotlight, Schreiber, Rachel McAdams, Brian d’Arcy James, Billy Crudup, and John Slattery took the stage, Watts could be seen weeping along with Mark Ruffalo‘s wife, Sunny Coigney. The A House Divided and You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger star explained why she was crying:
“[Sunny and I] just had a tearful moment and holding and squeezing each other.”
During his acceptance speech, Ruffalo took some time to talk about the thousands of victims, who were abused by priests. Ruffalo said:
“I have to thank our producers, Tom McCarthy and Josh Singer, who just took every single opportunity to tell the truth. They didn’t take any cheap way, it was always the truth and honored these people. These victims who are dead, and the survivors who are still alive, of one of the most horrific things that our culture has allowed to happen. This movie allows them to be seen in a world that has been blind to them. And so it is such an honor to be standing in front of you on behalf of them. And this amazing cast.”
Naomi Watts might be up for a SAG Award next year with her forthcoming movies Shut In, The Divergent Series: Allegiant, The Book of Henry, and The Bleeder that will be released soon.
