Residents of Butler County, Missouri were recently alarmed by the disappearance of a 3-year-old girl.
A massive search was initiated, involving around a hundred people as well as several vehicles.
Comments did not stop flooding the online space, and while many feared the worst, the story ended in a positive way after all.
The girl was located in a cornfield, sleeping next to her family dog, a Yorkshire terrier named Fat Heath.
Everyone seemed relieved at the conclusion of the dramatic search, and a lot of people were focused on the dog, who most probably did not mind the extra attention.
Some statements on the situation have brought attention to the fact that being lost in a cornfield can make search operations particularly challenging, even for experienced rescue teams.
The field can act as a tough sound barrier, making it difficult to communicate as well as to search for the missing person by yelling out their name.
Additionally, a cornfield can reportedly be extremely uncomfortable for a young child, which likely contributed to the exhaustion of the little girl and her eventual decision to fall asleep.
It is possible that this was a major contributing factor to the safe and happy conclusion of the search, as moving around would have likely made the girl’s rescue more difficult.
A child getting lost in a cornfield is nothing new under the sun, but unfortunately, the story does not always get a positive ending like this one, especially in more rural communities with limited access to rescue specialists.
In clear, 12 hours passed between the time the child disappeared from her home and the successful rescue. The girl, Remy Elliott, was found by her uncle, Quinlin, her mom, Timber Merritt‘s brother.
She said, “I looked for her by myself thinking maybe she was just in the woods or somewhere where I just couldn’t see her.”
Social media lit up for the positive outcome.
