Miley Cyrus paid $300,000 for a Ryan McGinley photograph and donated $200,000, all the same night.
On Wednesday night, Cyrus and Rihanna arrived at the 2014 amfAR LA Inspiration Gala, held at Milk Studios in Hollywood, California in some daring outfits.
But once at the charity event, both ladies decided to spend big and help those living with HIV and AIDS. Miley Cyrus took part in a tough bidding war with Tom Ford over a picture of a naked woman taken by Ryan McGinley.
Cyrus won by forking out $300,000 for McGinley’s work. Minutes after signing the $300,000 check, Cyrus donated another $200,000 to the AIDS research organization.
Rihanna paid $35,000 for a pair of Harry Winston diamond link earrings featuring 72 diamonds set in platinum and later spent $100,000 on the photograph “Elizabeth Taylor at the Eden Roc” by Willy Rizzo.
When asked about her generosity, Miley Cyrus jokingly said:
“I’m not generous, I’m a little drunk, that is why I am half of million deep.”
Cyrus eventually got serious and explained her mega donation:
“If I’m going to have a voice, I would like to start an open dialogue about prevention and awareness and how people in the world have been affected by HIV and AIDS,” Cyrus said at the event. “Hopefully I could break down people’s walls that have been built up around sexuality. I’m obviously not too embarrassed to talk about these things, especially with young people.”
The American foundation for AIDS Research is an international nonprofit organization that was founded in the 1980s by a group of researchers and scientists.
It is dedicated to the support of AIDS research, HIV prevention, treatment education, and the advocacy of AIDS-related public policy.
Over $3 million were raised at the 2014 amfAR Gala, Miley Cyrus’ purchase of the $300,000 Ryan McGinley masterpiece and her $200,000 donation, highly contributed.
At least she’s giving back and to a good cause.
