Mika Brzezinski runs off covering “Furry” story. Discovering what a Furry convention is all about, prompted Brzezinski to run off the set of her program. On Monday, the hosts of Morning Joe, were doing a segment on a chlorine gas incident that occurred at the 2014 Furry Convention in Chicago, Illinois.

Brzezinski read the prompter and explained that thousands of people gathered at the Hyatt Regency Hotel, were evacuated at around 1 a.m. after guests reported a chlorine odor on the 9th floor.

Brzezinski went on to share that 19 people were hospitalized and police believe that the incident was intentional. As she was talking about the incident, Mika Brzezinski and co-host Joe Scarborough started paying attention to a video of the attendees of the Furry convention and noticed that they were all dressed in animal costume, which prompted them to ask, what are furries? The answer:

Furries are people interested in fictional anthropomorphic animal characters with human personalities and characteristics. Examples of anthropomorphic attributes include exhibiting human intelligence and facial expressions, the ability to speak, walk on two legs, and wear clothes.

Upon understanding who attends a Furry event, Mika Brzezinski started laughing to the point that she decided to run off the stage and hide in the back of the studio for several minutes.

While Scarborough and Brzezinski were giggling, Willie Geist stepped in, and tried to finish the segment. Few voices took to social media to say that Mika Brzezinski should not be laughing at people hit by deadly gases even if they are dressed in strange outfits.

But many were less sympathetic. One person stated that people who attend Furry events deserve to be gassed. Watch Mika Brzezinski try to run off the set due to the meaning of the word furry below.

Here is a statement from the organizers of Midwest FurFest after the incident:

“At 1:10 AM the entire hotel was evacuated, first across Bryn Mawr Ave. in front of the Hyatt as per Rosemont Fire Department’s standard procedures, then when it became apparent that the wait would take longer, the Stephens Convention Center was opened to provide warmth and shelter to our guests.”

It continued:

“As we wake up today we want to continue to provide the best possible convention that we can, despite the trying circumstances. We ask you to continue to be patient, and remember that the volunteers who make Midwest FurFest happen intend to give 110% to make sure that the fun, friendship, and good times of Midwest FurFest 2014 overshadow last night’s unfortunate incident.”

Update:

Mika Brzezinski went viral again on December 19, when she got in a shouting match with Roland Martin over VH1’s black reality show, Sorority Sisters, that is currently facing a huge backlash for its depiction of black people.

  1. Once again, it is amazing to me how proponents of individual rights, free expression, and tolerance for all people also have their own limitations, or prejudice, or some “…ist.” The difference seems to be, if self-proclaimed overseers of fairness and equality decide it is something to ridicule or just laugh at, even to the extent of an unprofessional break in a news broadcast, they shouldn’t be held accountable for disrespecting a minority group. People could have died due to the ignorance of and intolerance of “furries” expressing themselves freely and in a matter of seconds the story became about them, showing their ignorance and assumptive bias.

    1. I think this is hilarious. Mika was charming and I empathized with her and Joe. Sometimes you just have to laugh. The story is funny when you think about adults dressing themselves up as animal cartoon characters and then having to walk the streets in costume. That would have been great to see.

No one was seriously hurt and police are treating the matter as a crime. The Furrys were only a small part of the hotel guests but certainly the most bizarre. I read that the Furrys were sent to wait in the convention center across the street where they were having a dog show. What timing! Like a TV sitcom but it really happened and actually everyone on camera seemed to be in high spirits and enjoying the ruckus.

        1. No furries were hurt in the evacuation. I think your video would have been better with some furry footage.

          1. Only 20% of “furries” own a costume. A “furry” is merely a fan of anthropomorphic animals.

There were nearly 5000 furries attending FurFest that night. The video that Yume links consists of nothing but furries. Only a minority may own a costume, and a smaller minority still were actually wearing one at the time of the evacuation. A minority of a minority of 5000 is still a very visible impression.

The pain felt by everyone that night was real. At least 7 furries were sent to hospital with some amount of lung damage. Another one had a severe panic attack and needed their expensive one-of-a-kind customized costume cut open by medics for emergency treatment. Those that were exposed to the gas may face an increased risk of lung cancer in following years.

But that’s nothing. You want to know what real pain is like? Try evacuating from a chlorine attack some time. You will hear that people are vomiting up blood and being rushed to hospital. You won’t have any contact with your best friends, and no idea if they are even alive. Then you hear one of them wound up in hospital, for all you know they could be in a critical condition.

For many, this was the most traumatic event of our lives. Then these excuses for journalists pop up on TV the next morning and start laughing. That hurt.

Did journalists laugh all the way through the 1993 WTC bombing reports? Didn’t think so. Thousands could have died if those buildings came down, just like 9/11. How is that any different to setting off a chlorine bomb in a hotel with nearly 5000 guests? If this had happened two hours later, people would have been sleeping and the death toll would be in the thousands. Chlorine gas is the same stuff used during the Holocaust, it’s lethal.

If the presenters were too incompetent and insensitive to avoid laughing, they should have cut away and fired them. The presenters and production company should definitely have issued a formal apology. First day of 2015, and still no apology at all. Mika even re-tweeted a clip of her running off stage, ha ha very funny. A few keystrokes and she could have included an apology. But she’s too “important” for that.

      1. Let’s inject chlorine gas into you, and then we’ll all get a laugh. After all, sometimes you just have to laugh. You idiot.

        1. Sorry, but adults dressed in furry animal costumes for a convention is always going to strike me as funny. Especially once I see the video.
Grown men and women dressed as furry animals or my little ponies are just funny. It’s so ridiculous, how can one be expected not to laugh.

        2. if your sick culture is going to play out your godless deviant extremely weird behavior you gotta expect a decent person to send you a message about keeping your sick sh*t in your basement where it belongs you sick little ma**ot

    2. Get over yourself man… it’s funny. Those people are free to dress up however they like and other people are free to think it’s amusing.

    3. What I find offensive about this is the hypocrisy. This was all a setup. Mika knows what Furries are about. This news items was no “hilarious” surprise to her.
Her fake reaction was all part of a bit that the anchors either planned beforehand or Mike chose to use to call attention to herself. She ought to be embarrassed not only to lie but to work at a so-called news site that she knew would allow such unprofessional behavior.

      1. Kathy, with all due respect. I did not know what a furry is? I don’t understand it but if that is what they want to do then fine. I do think it is a bit funny to see adults dressed like furry animals, just as I would people at comicon. I think it is cool and some may be funny. I do not think it is funny that someone or groups would try to hurt them because they dressed this way. The whole concept does make me chuckle a little.

      2. R you kidding me? Mika…unprofessional “never”! I have never heard about “the furry” (ies). When something is funny you laugh. It’s human nature. Don’t cause drama over something you do that causes people to LOL. Really, with all the news Mica & Joe share with us every morning…you should be honored that this was even covered on ‘Morning Joe’. Honesty…I find it funny, and with that in mind I say Thanks, for making my crazy morning seem less stressful. I love Morning Joe with Mica, you are indeed human.

    5. I get the funny part, but it does come off as unprofessional and rude. I think its funny those fools in Ferguson are burning down the local businesses, it’s like what is wrong with you morons to destroy the stores that provide a service to the community.? Fools.

    6. mark you are a pc retard and nobody gives a rat sh*t what the hell you think you fake little communist fairyman

  2. Why would the lack of professionalism on this show be a surprise to anyone? With a lead such as Joe Scarborough it is nearly impossible to maintain a high level of respectability. Mika as an example is there because of her dad and no other reason. Well ok she is a perfect foil for the imbecile like tactics of Joe Scarborough as well.

  3. Okay, a host reads and discusses news. Everybody especially on tv is always under some tension not to inappropriately behave. The chlorine leak story is presented, serious-horrid news. But then the obvious
question that host/personality asks is: “what is a furry convention?” It is (dryly?) explained, and she becomes (semi) hysterical, simultaneously realizing that’s not necessarily a good thing to be. And so Mika’s laughter & self-exiting is an anecdote/event/fodder for typical internet chit-chat including probably semi terrific jokes & flames.

    1. Except for two problems.

Firstly, she learns what a furry is while doing a news summary on a live show. Do you think the producers do this without briefing? It’s a basic rule of production: You never put your hosts on the spot and expect them to improvise on air, because if you do that they end up making fools of themselves – or worse, saying something that gets the network in legal trouble.

Secondly, look at the spectacle put on. Even when she leaves, she doesn’t just sneak off behind the camera. She makes a run for a back door, in full view of the cameras, while another host shouts and points to make sure everyone notices. I find it hard to believe that a professional television host wouldn’t know the difference between ‘behind the camera’ and ‘active live set’ when running off.

These details strongly indicate the incident was staged. It’s a publicity stunt, and a lot of people are falling for it. A memorable, funny little incident to make the show more memorable and perhaps draw in a few new viewers if the clip goes viral.

  4. Since when does political correctness govern the human sensory response? Sadness, Laughter, Anger, all fall into the category of autonomic responses to stimuli. No two people have the same level of restraint or response.
This was about a deviant (not within the norm) sexual behavior where adults, grown-ups, dress up in furry costumes, some with holes allowing access to their genitals, and use them in sex play. if that isn’t funny, what the heck is? Okay, so it isn’t legal or ethical to bone the actual animals, so these people become the animals they would love to bang where it legal. Kind of waaaaay off the grid if you ask me, but hey, to each their own.

    1. Is that what the furry do! This is about who dress like animals to have sex. OMG! This is hysterical LOL! I don’t think it was a gas leak they were smelling; ugh nasty!

  5. In the meantime, 17 veterinarians were hurt when the furries scratched them while being treated. Oh the devastation.

  6. Let up on the woman, who amongst us hasn’t had a moment like this in their lives; something that strikes us and we can’t control it. I don’t think there was any malicious intent.

  7. I started laughing uncontrollable myself…..I think it’s great that people are having fun doing something that’s not rude, violent or disgusting….good for them…I hope they enjoy the rest of the event.

    1. they dress up like animals and have sex with strangers…if that’s the kind of world you want to live in then your an idiot. You godless freaks have really lost your way…your all a bunch of furry dogs screwing each other

      1. You seem like a bitter person. Just because someone wants to have fun in a way that suits THEIR needs but doesn’t agree with YOUR views, doesn’t mean it’s bad. Get a life and get some perspective you idiot.

  8. The silliness continued today with multiple mentions of Mika and the Furries. Joy Behar was a guest today, apparently to talk about her book, but the first several minutes of her interview time were given to demands that Mika explain to Joy why she found the furries so funny. Why was the furry story even mentioned on the show? MJ’s ratings are suffering and I think they are trying to inject some humor into the show. It all comes off as forced and silly, and it is the wrong way to go. How about we get serious here and try some journalism.

    1. Most of the Furry fandom is around 20 or so, age range spanning from 12 all the way to 80 (if not older).

No, we don’t all work in a theme park, the same way Trekkies don’t work for the United Federation of Planets, Star Wars enthusiasts who dress like Storm Troopers don’t work for the Empire or a Sith Lord, the same way people who dress like a SG-x unit don’t work for the Air Force (though some might, I’ll grant you that), folks who dress up like any of the Marvel comics work for Tony Stark and/or SHIELD, or…

      Yeah…

      1. I think it is cool you have a convention where you can get together with people who love the same thing as you do! And, I am sure if that were me, and I were dressed up like that and forced outside I would look at the person next to me and laugh and say, “Oh my gosh, can you imagine what we all look like standing out here? Or better yet what we all looked like running out here like in a stampede?” haha!! And hopefully laughing together with them!! I have respect for all people and their choices, and would never laugh at someone getting hurt, but would try to find some humor so talking about the horror’s are easier!! (:

      2. This is the very reason that the rest of the world hates us. Trying to waste the time to report on a subject with a serious subject matter at a trivial event is a bit cumbersome. I’m sorry there was a chlorine leak but really, a furry convention-PLEASE! We have kids starving in America and yet we want to report on the happenings at a furry convention.

  9. If you look like a duck, talk like a duck, are frequently seen in the company of ducks, but are a human…I’m going to laugh at your dumb ass too!!!

  10. I don’t know of anyone that hasn’t become helpless with laughing at sometimes the oddest things…..I think she would rather not have had it happen, but it happens! and besides…..trying to be an animal???

  11. I feel bad for her. She must have felt absolutely mortified to have to run off the set. She’s not the first, nor will she be the last TV figure to lose composure on air. For example, Pat Sajak walked off the set of Wheel of Fortune. It probably took guts to take herself off the air so the important points of the story could still come across.

  12. mika runs like a furrie!! nice. but please joe don’t run for president. rather have 4 more years of Obama. ha ha ha have a blessed day

  13. She’s an idiot. Figures she’d lose it over something so not amusing. Amazed she got her head out of Obamas butt long enough to do her job.

  14. I LOVE MIKA, BUT I CANT STAND JOE!IF IT WASN’T FOR THE OTHER 2, I WOULDNT BOTHER WATCHING 5 MINUTES A DAY. I AM SURPRISED JOE STILL IS THE HEADLINE NAME. THEY CANT DO BETTER THAN THAT? NO ONE LIKES HIM. MSNBC, REALLY?? MIKA HAS MAINTAINED HER PROFESSIONALISM, CONSIDERING SHE TOLERATE JOE. SHE HAD 1 MOMENT. WE ALL DO. AND SHE EXCUSED HERSELF. LAY-OFF GUYS!!

  15. Mika,

Is a professional, and I am sure she did not mean to offend anyone, but, I felt the segment did merited humor, not for the gas incident, but for the fact that the event is held for people with this strange fetish. (Furry)

  16. How unprofessional but we do not expect Mika or Joe to act like Professionals They Never Have. Why they are still on the Air I will never understand.

  17. Blaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha . . . H I L A R I O U S ! ! ! ! ! !
