Michelle Obama attended the Kennedy Center’s event in a gown that is being called the dress of the year. She was not only FLOTUS, Mrs. Obama earned the title of queen of the night when she stepped out in a royal blue and black lace dress designed by the iconic Oscar de la Renta.
Michelle Obama donned a blue gown for the Kennedy Center Honors that is making headlines – and for once, Republicans and Democrats seem to agree that FLOTUS looked stunning.
On Sunday night, many stars including Usher, Aretha Franklin, Miranda Lambert, and Sara Bareilles joined Barack and Michelle Obama at the 2015 Kennedy Center Honors Gala held at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, DC.
The soirée began just minutes after Obama’s major speech on terrorism from the Oval Office – needless to say that many Americans found it fairly odd for the commander in chief to finish talking about ISIL and the San Bernardino attack and rush to a fancy party.
Luckily for Mr. Obama, while at the event, the attention was mainly on his wife’s gown. For the soirée, Mrs. Obama decided to honor late Dominican icon and designer Oscar de la Renta. The mom of two opted for a blue and black strapless lace gown that was part of Oscar de la Renta’s last collection.
Obama wore matching blue earrings and statement rings, and she opted for a simple brushed-back hairstyle. To complete the look, Obama wore neutral-colored makeup, pink lipstick, and flat shoes – yes, she sported flats! The stunning dress worn by Obama at the Kennedy Center Honors, (there is also a similar version in black and gold), was presented at Oscar de la Renta’s final fashion show before his passing in 2014.
The fashion designer, who spent more than 50 years dressing royalty, Hollywood celebrities, and U.S. officials from Jacqueline Kennedy to Hillary Clinton, publicly criticized Obama in 2011 for wearing an Alexander McQueen dress at a state dinner with Chinese officials. The First Lady resisted wearing Oscar de la Renta’s creations for years until she broke the cycle in October 2014, about ten days before his death.
This year’s Kennedy Center Honors recognized the work of George Lucas, Carole King, Rita Moreno, Cicely Tyson, and Seiji Ozawa.
