Michael Sam has split from Vito Cammisano less than six months after the football player proposed. Cammisano and Sam are not commenting on the separation, but all signs point to a split. Sam, the first openly gay football player in America, briefly left his team the Montreal Alouettes to handle personal matters and has also deleted every single picture of his former lover on Instagram and Twitter.
Michael Sam has split from his fiancé, Vito Cammisano, just hours after the first openly gay football player celebrated and applauded the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to rule in favor of same-sex marriage being legal in all 50 states. Although things remain a bit complicated in places like Texas, Georgia, Alabama, and Louisiana.
Immediately after Friday’s ruling, Texas’ Attorney General Ken Paxton issued a statement explaining that he believes that marriage is between a man and a woman, and that will never change. Paxton said:
“But no court, no law, no rule, and no words will change the simple truth that marriage is the union of one man and one woman. Nothing will change the importance of a mother and a father to the raising of a child. And nothing will change our collective resolve that all Americans should be able to exercise their faith in their daily lives without infringement and harassment.”
In the summer of 2013, football defensive end Michael Sam made history by announcing that he is a gay and in early 2015, the athlete and his longtime boyfriend, Vito Cammisano, traveled to St. Peters Basilica in Vatican City where they got engaged.
Sam and Cammisano, who met while attending the University of Missouri and started dating in 2011, had seemed happy and in love.
Cammisano, who was on the college’s swim team, was very active on social media getting support for Sam as he competed on the 20th season of Dancing With The Stars.
The pair often spoke about their upcoming wedding and their love for each other, but all of that came to a screeching halt few weeks ago.
Cammisano was spotted on several occasions without his engagement ring including in his new video below, and few days ago, Sam deleted all the photos of his future-ex partner.
The Canadian Football League has confirmed that Sam, who plays for the Montreal Alouettes, left for several days and even missed the season’s first game to focus on personal issues.
When Sam returned to his team, he took part in a press conference where he was asked about the split. His only comment was:
“I had to deal with personal matters when I was home. That’s all taken care of, so now I’m back.”
He also shared his thoughts on the Supreme Court’s announcement on gay marriage by saying:
“I’m just happy that I can get married and it would be legal.”
