It is the very first night of the Republican National Convention, and believe it or not, the two following hashtags, #MelanieTrump and #MichelleObama, are trending on social media. Why?
Mrs. Trump gave a very solid speech at the gathering in Ohio and was praised for looking strong and brave on stage. While she failed to humanize husband Donald Trump and shared zero anecdote, she was applauded for the manner she delivered the speech.
However, while the former model was talking, several people felt that there was something familiar about her speech. It did not take long for some of them, starting with Jarrett Hill, to take to social media to point out that Mrs. Trump lifted a paragraph from First Lady Michelle Obama‘s 2008 speech at the Democratic National Convention. Mrs. Trump said:
“From a young age, my parents impressed on me the values that you work hard for what you want in life; that your word is your bond and you do what you say and keep your promise; that you treat people with respect.”
In 2008, Mrs. Obama stated:
“You work hard for what you want in life; that your word is your bond and you do what you say you’re going to do; that you treat people with dignity and respect, even if you don’t know them, and even if you don’t agree with them.”
The First Lady said back then:
“We want our children in this nation to know that the only limit to your achievements is the strength of your dreams and your willingness to work for them.”
Trump shared last night:
“We want our children — and all children in this nation — to know that the only limit to the height of your achievements is the reach of your dreams and your willingness to work for them.”
Many have contacted the Trump campaign to ask, who exactly plagiarized Mrs. Obama, was it Mrs. Trump or her speech writers? The campaign had little to say and issued the statement below.
