Man awakens 12 years later from coma, becomes author of an amazing book where he shares his story. At the age of 12 years old, Martin Pistorius became very ill, slipped into a coma, and remained in a vegetative state for 12 years. Two years into the coma, still unable to communicate, he regained consciousness, and became aware of everything around him.
Man awakens 12 years after being in a coma and pens a book entitled Ghost Boy: The Miraculous Escape of a Misdiagnosed Boy Trapped Inside His Own Body, where she shares his remarkable story.
At the age of 12 years old, a South African boy named Martin Pistorius became ill. According to Martin Pistorius’ parents, Rodney and Joan Pistorious, he was a lively young boy, who loved to break, rebuild all of his cars, and play with gadgets around the home.
In a matter of weeks, the boy who was dreaming of being a mechanic became non-verbal, stopped eating, was disabled, and wheel-chaired bound.
According to The Inquisitr, doctors believed that the child was suffering from cryptococcal meningitis, and told his parents that he would not live very long.
For the next 12 years, Martin Pistorius remained in a coma and his father set a routine, which consisted of waking up at 5 a.m. everyday to dress his son and take him to the care center.
About 8 hours later, he would pick up Martin, bathe him, feed him dinner, and put him to bed. His parents set an alarm to go off every two hours to turn the boy’s body in order to avoid bed sores. Rodney Pistorious said:
“Eight hours later, I’d pick him up, bathe him, feed him, put him in bed, set my alarm for two hours so that I’d wake up to turn him so that he didn’t get bedsores.”
And one day, a miracle took place, Pistorious awoke and found a way to communicate with his family. With the help of a computer, the survivor explained that 2 years into his coma, he became aware of everything around him.
According to Examiner, Martin Pistorius, now 39 and happily married, said he remembers hearing his mother praying for him to die and watching hours and hours of Barney. He said:
“Yes, I was there, not from the very beginning, but about two years into my vegetative state, I began to wake up. I was aware of everything, just like any normal person. Everyone was so used to me not being there that they didn’t notice when I began to be present again. The stark reality hit me that I was going to spend the rest of my life like that — totally alone.”
He went on to confess that he now hates Barney and has forgiven his mother because he understands that her harsh words came from a place of desperation. He wrote in the book:
“As time passed, I gradually learned to understand my mother’s desperation. Every time she looked at me, she could see only a cruel parody of the once-healthy child she had loved so much.”
Man awakens 12 years after coma, his story may help experts and families better understand the mysteries behind the matter.
The picture is flawed with the man in the left rear part of the frame bending to smell the flowers – a very lovely gesture but not one meant in coordination with your happy picture as a couple. Photo shop him out. I heard your story on NPR and now I see your book – good luck with it – and life in communication mode.
Hard to imagine the PC police not refusing to feed him in all that time. Bravo!!
