Mama June comes out as a bisexual American woman, and she is not the only member of the family who has a story to tell. June’s 15-year-old daughter, Lauryn Thompson, is also out of the closet.
The star of TLC’s reality series Here Comes Honey Boo Boo Mama June comes out as bisexual and gets a cold reception from Internet commentators, who believe that she is doing all of this for attention.
Usually, Web users are supportive when a celebrity reveal that they are gay or that they have dabbled in same-sex activities, this was not the case with Mama June.
The coming out of the 35-year-old reality TV star quickly turned into a bloodbath, some were quick to make jokes about her weight, others slammed the admission as a shameless plea for relevancy. Either way, most people just want her to go away.
Was the reaction partly based on weightism? Yes, probably. When a hot young Hollywood actress says that she is bisexual, most people listen and are genuinely curious to learn more.
Additionally, Mama June, whose real name is June Shannon, has spent the past year getting into a lot of trouble. For example, she allegedly dated a convicted child molester. A move like this one contributed to a decline of her reservoir of goodwill in some corners.
To make matter worse, the fact that her daughter, Lauryn Thompson, also known as Pumpkin, came out as bisexual during the same Inside Edition interview added to the impression that all of this was put together to create a great amount of buzz.
During the April 24 interview, the 15-year-old girl said:
“I’m attracted to females, and I’m attracted to males. You cannot hide who you truly are.”
Her mother was sitting next her when she added:
“She is gay, too! June is gay, too!”
Mama June was later asked by TMZ to elaborate on her same-sex adventures. This was when she decided to share that she slept with three women in the past, and now that she is single, she is open to dating one in the future. June explained:
“It’s no big deal, I was young and experimented with it, never went pro though just played the minor leagues. It’s open season. I will keep ALL my options open.”
Mama June’s brother, Lee “Uncle Poodle” Thompson, is gay and has been very active in pushing LGBT causes in the South.
