Donna Campbell’s LGBT discriminatory proposal is making headlines. Republican and Tea Party darling Donna Campbell from Texas is pushing a bill that would make it legal for businesses to deny services to and fire LGBT people or anyone they do not like for that matter.
The Donna Campbell LGBT fight has just begun. On Monday, Dr Donna Campbell introduced a proposal that has been dubbed a license to “discriminate” against lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people.
The Texas State Senator’s bill would allow business owners to turn away or terminate employments of members of the LGBT community under the guise of religious freedom.
Campbell’s Senate Joint Resolution 10, if becomes law would also apply to government contractors. The controversial proposal reads in part:
“The government may not burden an individual’s or religious organization’s freedom of religion or right to act or refuse to act in a manner motivated by a sincerely held religious belief unless the government proves that the burden is in furtherance of a compelling governmental interest and is the least restrictive means of furthering that interest.”
The document goes on to explain the types of burdens:
“For purposes of this subsection, the term “burden” includes indirect burdens such as withholding benefits, assessing penalties, and denying access to facilities or programs.”
In 2012, Campbell introduced a nearly identical measure, but was quashed in committee. Some supporters and many of Donna Campbell’s opponents are baffled as to why she is determined to pass the legislation, because Texas already has a similar law in place.
The Religious Freedom Restoration Act makes it legal for businesses to discriminate against people because of their sexual orientation and gender identity.
Donna Campbell’s fight against LGBT people stems from the fact that like many conservatives, she believes there is a war raging in America that could “eradicate religious freedoms.”
