Kim Burrell, a famous gospel singer, who has worked with artists like Frank Ocean, Pharrell Williams, and R. Kelly is facing a PR nightmare right now for airing some very controversial views about homosexuality. Career-wise, 2016 is ending on a sour note for this legend and 2017 might not be better if the current cacophony surrounding her misstep lives on.
In a video that was featured on her Facebook Live page, the Texas native depicts the LGBT community as living in sin. The comments went viral and were blasted in various corners of the Internet. Some are already predicting that the woman, who influenced people like Beyoncé Knowles, Faith Evans, and Jessica Simpson on their artistic journey, has severely damaged her career with those remarks.
Here is what got the “Sweeter” artist in so much trouble:
“I came to tell you about sin. That sin nature… That perverted homosexual spirit, and the spirit of delusion and confusion, it has deceived many men and women… You as a man, you open your mouth and take a man’s penis in your face, you are perverted. You are a woman and will shake your face in another woman’s breast, you are perverted.”
After realizing that the anti-gay controversy was reaching new heights, Burrell tried to walk back some of the initial remarks without a real apology. She said:
“We’re not in a war against flesh and blood. I came on because I care about God’s creation and every person from the LGBT and anything else, any other kind of thing that is supporting gay… I never said LGBT last night. I said S-I-N and whatever falls in the sin was preached.”
This was not enough for the angry crowd. Online protesters are calling for an immediate boycott of all things Kim Burrell including an appearance on the Ellen DeGeneres Show that was scheduled for next week. The gospel star was set to perform “I See A Victory” with the “Happy” producer.
