John Mellencamp’s son, Hud, was sentenced to one year probation for the assault of a man that took place in 2013. Hud’s younger brother, 19-year-old Speck, will have to spend four days in jail for the same attack.
The sons of rock singer-songwriter John Mellencamp were sentenced in their assault case on Friday. Hud Mellencamp, 20, and Speck Mellencamp, 19, pleaded guilty for their role in the attack on a 19-year-old man in Bloomington, Indiana. The incident took place in July 2013.
A third person involved in the attack named Ty Smith, also 19, has a court date set for April 29. Smith is the son of Tracy Smith, IU baseball coach. The two brothers initially faced felony charges in the assault case. The charges were reduced after the two siblings agreed to a plea deal.
Hud Mellencamp will have to serve 50 hours of community service in addition to one year probation. Speck Mellencamp was sentenced to four days in the Monroe County Jail, and he also got one year probation. The two men are allowed to serve the punishment while they attend college. Monroe County Chief Deputy Prosecutor Bob Miller said that the charges were reduced because “serious bodily injury” could not be substantiated like in usual felony cases.
The three men were accused of punching and kicking the man, they believed he had attacked Speck Mellencamp. John Mellencamp did not attend the hearing, but the two brothers could count on the support of their mother, former Victoria’s Secret model Elaine Irwin. Irwin and the “Jack & Diane” singer were married for 18 years before announcing their split in 2010.
Irwin, 45, married Jay Penske, 36, an Indy car team owner, in 2012. Together, they welcomed a daughter in May 2013. John Mellencamp has dated actress Meg Ryan on and off for the past four years.
What are your thoughts on the reduction of charges? Should parents stand with their children in a situation like this?
