Janet Jackson blacklisted, is the strong statement coming from the NFL this week. 10 years after Super Bowl XXXVIII halftime show controversy, also known as nipplegate, Janet is still on the blacklist.
Is Janet Jackson still blacklisted? That’s the very interesting question, the folks at TMZ.com asked the NFL, after it was revealed that the organization wanted Super Bowl XLIX (49) halftime show acts to pay to perform at the most watched television event of the year.
The NFL’s answer was quite succinct. Their statement read:
“As for potential acts — we have only ruled out Janet Jackson.”
Sometimes, less means more and the short comment says quite a bit. First, the legendary pop artist known as Janet Jackson is still blacklisted from performing at a Super Bowl halftime show, 10 years after the wardrobe malfunction seen around the globe.
Second, her partner in crime, the man who helped get her nipple exposed, Justin Timberlake, is still seen as a potential act. Timberlake played a major part in the scandalous moment, if he can be forgiven, why not do the same with Janet?
The reason is actually quite simple to understand. The “Rock Your Body” singer is still on top of his game, in 2013, he released two hit albums and since then, he has been performing at sold out venues worldwide. Jessica Biel’s husband is still a big get for the NFL.
On the hand, nipplegate more or less ended Michael Jackson’s younger sister musical career. Janet was never regarded as the same after the infamous incident and her album sales tanked.
Additionally, her movie career never took off, the last time she appeared on the big screen was in 2010’s For Colored Girls. Janet has become an easy target for the NFL, since she is no longer a big draw. That’s why it was so facile for them to rub the fiasco in her face this week.
According to reports the three acts being considered for Super Bowl 2015 are Katy Perry, Coldplay and Rihanna. After reading the statement above, it seems safe to say that the Barbadian beauty is not a favorite to land the gig, since she is very controversial. The safe bet could be Perry who can put on a decent show and at the same time not ruffle too many feathers.
The NFL may have blacklisted Janet Jackson, but she is probably going to be fine. She married Qatari billionaire Wissam Al Mana in 2012.
