A former high school teacher in Aztec, New Mexico, recently came under heavy scrutiny for his involvement in a sexual misconduct scandal with one of his students.
As the investigation dug deeper into the incident, it came to light that it was not actually a single case — the teacher admitted to other similar occurrences with some of his other students.
The initial incident concerned a relationship between teacher James Dee Coulter and a 17-year-old student, but in the course of police proceedings, Coulter allegedly admitted to having molested several other students as well.
State police put out a statement that read, “A former Aztec High School female student disclosed to police that she on at least two occasions had sex with Coulter in 2015 when she was seventeen years old.”
“During the student’s involvement with Coulter, Coulter told the student that if she said anything about their relationship, he would likely go to jail and it could potentially ruin his life, so the student did not report the relationship,” the release added.
The investigation had already been running for over two months after police were contacted with suspicions regarding Coulter’s activities.
Since June, authorities have been digging deep into the case to determine its full extent, and it looks like new details are going to keep coming out on a regular basis if the current state is to be of any indication.
Currently, Coulter is faced with a minimum of four counts of sexual intercourse with a minor.
His situation is already looking quite grim — with potentially lifelong repercussions — but it does not look like this is even the full extent of the incident.
It remains to be seen how much more is going to come to light and whether any new facts are going to change the context of the situation.
Coulter has had no public comments so far and has maintained a relatively low profile during the investigation and in light of the current public attention towards him.
