Game of Thrones will finish when it finishes, says a very relaxed and unfazed George R. R. Martin. In a recent interview, Martin, the author of the epic fantasy novels, said that he is in no hurry to finish his sixth book, and he is fine with the writers of HBO ending the series how ever they want.
Talking at an event, George R. R. Martin confessed that Game of Thrones will finish before he writes his next book, and he is not all concerned with it.
On Thursday, George Raymond Richard Martin also known as George R. R. Martin, the author of the fantasy novels, A Song of Ice and Fire Series, (Game of Thrones), took part in a Q&A during the Sasquan science-fiction convention held in Spokane, Washington where he was asked to give an update on the sixth book.
The author, who has already made history with A Game of Thrones, A Clash of Kings, A Storm of Swords, A Feast for Crows, and A Dance with Dragons is currently working on the last two books of the series – The Winds of Winter and A Dream of Spring. Martin told reporters that initially he was pressuring himself to complete the novels before HBO wrapped up the record-breaking series, but he has changed his mind.
Martin said he no longer cares, and has no plans to compete with the writers of the TV show. The Sandkings writer said:
“The show is moving forward like a locomotive, or sometimes a jet locomotive,” Martin said. “They’re writing 60-page scripts, I’m writing 1,500-page novels. So who the hell knows? I’m just going to tell my story, and they’re telling their story and adapting my books, and we shall see.
Asked if he is worried that the end of the television show will be drastically different from his writings, he said that he does not mind. He shared:
“There was a period where I was worried about that. Then I said, to hell with that. Worrying about it isn’t going to change it one way or another. I still sit down at the typewriter, and I have to write the next scene and the next sentence … I’m just going to tell my story, and they’re telling their story and adapting my books, and we shall see.”
Asked if the book will be ready by the spring of 2016, he gave a hilarious response:
“Don’t ask me when the book is going to be done — I’ll ask my minions to lop your head off.”
However, fans of the hit series were already aware that the main writers were forced to take a different direction from Martin’s. Producer David Benioff stated earlier this year:
“Luckily, we’ve been talking about this with George [R.R. Martin] for a long time… and we know where things are heading. So, we’ll eventually meet up at pretty much the same place where George is going. There might be a few deviations along the route, but we’re heading towards the same destination.”
