The strange situation around the Dominican Republic and some of its resorts continues.
Most recently, a group of teenagers from the state of Oklahoma traveling to the country for their senior trip all started complaining of strange symptoms shortly after arriving.
The Deer Creek High School graduates reportedly stayed at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino, the same place where several other American citizens have previously complained of health complications.
So far, seven youngsters have reportedly fallen with the illness, and their parents are not sure what is causing the condition.
One parent, Liz McLaughlin, who was accompanying the 40 students, including her daughter, Libby McLaughlin, explained: “We just ‘don’t know what is happening. Is it the water? Is it the ice? Is it the food? Is it the food handling? Is it the pesticides? We have no idea ‘what’s going on.”
Bennett Hill, a student, who fell sick, stated: “We’ve been hooked up to IVs since we first got here with antibiotics, just getting hydrated.”
Previous reports indicated that the resort might be incorrectly using pesticides, but this is yet to be corroborated.
It took about one day for the symptoms to start manifesting, and things went downhill quickly after that, according to reports.
Several students have already been hospitalized, although their treatment has mostly been to deal with the symptoms of nausea, rather than to address the actual underlying condition.
Physicians have commented that they are just trying to keep the teens in a stable condition through whatever means they have available.
It has not been confirmed whether there is any connection between the illness reported by the students, and the previous incidents involving several Americans.
The story continues to develop, and observers are likely going to see even more reports in the near future if the current trends go on.
Many have started to express their concerns about vacationing in the Dominican Republic, although for the time being, it looks like the issue might be localized to one specific resort in the country.
However, a Virginia man named Tim Jensen, who vacationed there earlier this month with his family, is urging people to stay out of the Dominican Republic after nine Americans died in the past year in mysterious conditions.
Jensen said: “This basically wrecked the rest of our vacation, it was not fun. Me personally and our family, we’re never going to the Dominican Republic again. It’s sad.”
His wife, Amy Burbach Jensen, added: “In my opinion, they should shut down that hotel and figure out what’s going down.”
On the other hand, the Dominican tourism minister, Francisco Javier Garcia, insists that the island is safe for tourists.
Garcia told Fox News: “I have been working in the capacity of minister for eleven years and this is the first time I have had to investigate the figures of visitors to the island. What began as a news story has transformed and transformed and transformed into a negative campaign [against the island]. Not because it was mounted, but it evolved.”
The politician claims that the cause of deaths revealed nothing criminal.
