Finn Jones has landed the role of Iron Fist, and many are not pleased. Those, who were hoping that Netflix would pick an Asian actor for the role, are not happy with Jones.
Finn Jones is the Iron Fist and social media erupts because an Asian did not get the role. It is official, Jones, famous for starring in Game of Thrones, has been picked to play Iron Fist in the upcoming Netflix by the same name.
The former Hollyoaks star will be portraying Daniel Rand, a young and rich New Yorker, who lost both of his parents during an expedition searching for a nexus to K’un L’un where Daniel’s father, Wendell Rand, was raised by the city’s ruler, Lord Tuan.
K’un L’un is a magical city where a colony of humanoid aliens whose spaceship crashed on Earth have been living. The loss of his parents because of Wendell Rand’s business partner, Harold Meachum, prompted young Daniel to learn martial arts in the hands of Lei Kung to seek revenge.
More about the character:
During the battle, Daniel throws himself against the scar of Shou-Lao, which burns a dragon tattoo into his chest. Having killed Shou-Lao, he enters its cave and plunges his fists into a brazier containing the creature’s molten heart, emerging with the power of the Iron Fist. It is later revealed that Daniel is part of a long lineage of Iron Fists. Daniel leaves to find his father’s killer. Returning to New York, Daniel Rand, dressed in the ceremonial garb of the Iron Fist, seeks out Harold Meachum, now head of Meachum Industries. After overcoming a number of attempts on his life, he confronts Meachum in his office, only to find the man legless—an amputation carried out when, after abandoning Daniel and his mother, he was caught in heavy snow and his legs became frostbitten. Meachum accepts his fate and tells Iron Fist to kill him. Overcome with pity, Iron Fist walks away. At that moment Meachum is murdered by a mysterious ninja, and his daughter Joy blames Iron Fist for the death. Eventually, Iron Fist clears his name and begins a career as a superhero, aided by his friends Colleen Wing and Misty Knight, falling in love with the latter.
According to reports, the Iron Fist series will follow a similar arc to the one followed by Iron Fist’s comics. Iron Fist is the fourth and final part in a series of shows that will culminate in a Defenders miniseries alongside Daredevil, Jessica Jones and Luke Cage.
Many are blasting the choice of Finn Jones instead of an Asian actor.
What do you think of Finn Jones’ casting?
Still, I remain convinced Iron Fist put Marvel in a pickle. Cast a white actor, it's appropriation. Cast an Asian, it's stereotyping.

Lol people are upset they cast a white actor to play Iron Fist who is actually white. Smh

It's too bad @Marvel didn't cast an Asian-American actor for Iron Fist.
— Darth Blaxican (@riot71) February 26, 2016
So apparently Iron Fist should have been cast as an Asian because stereotypes need to be encouraged.

iron fist's roots are in orientalism and that makes any casting complicated, but come on I feel like maybe you could have cast as asian dude
— noodle cutie (@Leask) February 26, 2016
There is a HUGE uproar because Marvel didn't cast a person of Asian decent to play the historically Caucasian character of Iron Fist.
— Ross Dillon! (@HypnoRoss) February 25, 2016
This "controversy" over Iron Fist is laughable. Just because the character knows Kung-fu, Marvel should have cast an Asian actor?

Not to take anything away from Finn, he's a fine actor but there goes a great opportunity to cast a more fittingly diverse lead as Iron Fist
