Ellen Pompeo, aka Dr. Meredith Grey, announced the death of her husband, Derek Shepherd, played by actor Patrick Dempsey in tonight’s special two-hour episode of Grey’s Anatomy called “She’s Leaving Home.” It was a unique episode where Pompeo had numerous flashforwards and even spoke to a ghost.
Ellen Pompeo‘s character Dr. Meredith Grey was in the spotlight this evening in Season 11 episode 22 entitled “She’s Leaving Home,” which aired on ABC.
The instalment picked up where things left off last week, the shocking death of Derek Shepherd played by Patrick Dempsey, but also featured many interesting flashforwards one year later in the life of Meredith Grey.
Dr. Meredith Grey walked into Seattle Grace Hospital where she announced that Dr. Derek Shepherd was dead. Different people, different reaction. Meredith Grey’s sister-in-law, Amelia Shepherd, (played by Caterina Scorsone), hid her feelings by giving an epic answer. She said:
“I don’t need the details, dead is dead. I’ve done this before, I know the drill — it’s not a big deal.”
Miranda Bailey (Chandra Wilson) and Dr. Ben Warren (Jason George) diffused the heartbreaking moment by doing what a majority of people would do – start a fight.
Bailey said that if she dies first she does not want to be resuscitated. She confessed:
“If something happens to me don’t let them hook me up to anything. Just donate my organs and let me go.”
Warren disagreed and brought up religion. Bailey concluded by saying that if her husband goes first, she can sleep with Idris Elba.
Dr. April Kepner (Sarah Drew) announces it is the best time to head back to the war zone. Dr. Meredith Grey, who skipped her husband’s funeral, and had appeared to be quitting her job, is moved to the future where viewers learned that she was pregnant for Sheperd.
A Thanksgiving, a Christmas and a Valentine’s Day later, after almost having a miscarriage, she gives birth to a baby girl named Ellis and eventually called to announce her return to the hospital.
Dr. Alex Karev (Justin Chambers), who was mistaken for her husband, but turned out to be her emergency contact, visited her at the maternity ward. Grey told Karev:
“I didn’t think I could do it, part of me thought ‘what if I have this baby and die?.’ Then I saw her face and I saw him in her, she is beautiful.”
The episode ended with the widow and mother of three getting back to work. Ellen Pompeo issued a statement after Dempsey left the series that read:
“I am honored and excited to tell the story of how Meredith goes on in the face of what feels like the impossible. I hope you all will join me on her journey.”
