The headlines “104-Year-Old Dr Pepper Fan” and “Elizabeth Sullivan Dr. Pepper” are trending, courtesy of a feisty centenarian from Fort Worth, Texas. Elizabeth Sullivan, a 104-year-old former educator, claimed that Dr. Pepper is the reason for her long and healthy life.
In an interview with local media, Elizabeth Sullivan, a mother of one, said that she fell in love with Dr. Pepper over 40 years ago.
Since discovering the famous “23 flavors” of Dr. Pepper, she can not stop drinking it. In case you were wondering, most people say the real 23 flavors in the soft drink formulated by pharmacist Charles Alderton in Morrison’s Old Corner Drug Store in Waco, Texas are:
1. Amaretto 2. Almond 3. Blackberry 4. Black Licorice 5. Carrot 6. Clove 7. Cherry 8. Caramel 9. Cola 10. Ginger 11. Juniper 12. Lemon 13. Molasses 14. Nutmeg 15. Orange 16. Prune 17. Plum 18. Pepper 19. Root Beer 20. Rum 21. Raspberry 22. Tomato 23. Vanilla.
Sullivan, who was a math teacher at Paschal High School for 15 years, has been drinking three cans of Dr. Pepper every day since the early 1970s.
She has been warned by several health experts to stop drinking the soda, but she has always refused. It is highly possible that her doctor told her that the ammonia in the soft drink can cause cancer and the large amount of caffeine can contribute to tremors, seizures, anxiety and an altered mental state. Sodas can also be the reason for imbalanced hormone levels, infertility and obesity.
The elderly woman with a great sense humor revealed that the only doctor she trusts is Dr. Pepper. Furthermore, all those medical experts, who have been warning her about the side effects of the beverage, are dead and gone – and she is well alive and kicking.
The 104-year-old former tutor told the reporter that people have:
“tried to give me coffee for breakfast. Well I’d rather have a Dr Pepper. I started drinking them about 40 years ago. Three a day. Every doctor that sees me says they’ll kill you, but they die and I don’t, so there must be a mistake somewhere.”
The local celebrity, who celebrated her birthday on Wednesday, confessed that she was not sure that she was going to live to see 104. The Dr. Pepper addict shared:
“Well at 103 I didn’t think I’d make it, but I’m still perking along.”
For her 104th birthday, Sullivan was given a Dr. Pepper-shaped cake and a gift basket filled with goodies like popcorn, wine and chocolate, courtesy of the CEO of Dr. Pepper Snapple Group Inc., Larry Young.
He also had several cases of Dr. Pepper delivered to the woman’s home.
Touched by Young’s gesture, she revealed:
“When you live to be 104 and still can talk to nice people, you deserve some Dr. Pepper, but I never expected this.”
104-year-old Elizabeth Sullivan briefly reflected on her life with the reporter by explaining:
“Man I’m feeling good. I’m glad I’m still here. I’m glad I’m not in a rest home. Glad I can read books and watch TV and have people come by and say hello.”
When asked, “What is the secret for a long life?,” Elizabeth Sullivan said she is clueless, but advises you “ to just keep living.”
