Daniel Radcliffe thinks Hollywood is a racist place. The 27-year-old English actor has made the comments during an interview with Victoria Derbyshire, a journalist for the BBC.
The Harry Potter star claims that despite having a reputation for being liberal, Hollywood still has much work to do when it comes to diversity. According to Radcliffe, another area that is raising problems is the integration of gays in the movie industry.
He says that some gay actors are still forced to stay in the closet to have a flourishing career. Here is what Mr. Radcliffe says about Hollywood’s diversity problem:
“It’s pretty undeniable. We like to think of ourselves as being a very, very…a progressive industry. But we have been lagging behind in all kinds of areas.”
The Imperium actor defends gay talents in the remarks below:
“I suppose then people just want to cast you as gay.”
Fans, who are hoping for a return to the Harry Potter franchise, will have to wait a little longer. He shares:
“No-one’s asked me about it and I definitely don’t think that I would do it at this point, certainly. It’s only been six years [since last playing Potter] and I’m really enjoying being able to do lots of different stuff at the moment. Maybe if 30 years had passed I would be thinking differently. They will be doing remakes, and I could play his dad, or something.”
Radcliffe’s comments about Hollywood race problems have sparked an intense debate online. Some people are slamming him for focusing on something that is not a big problem. Others are praising him for highlighting a matter that is affecting minority groups.
A few controversial commenters are stating that minorities are better at certain things, and whites might be better at acting. Radcliffe is a proud supporter of the left-leaning Labour Party in the Unite Kingdom.
