Common is joining Suicide Squad; the rapper-turned-actor is the latest star added to the David Ayer-directed superhero film that will be released on August 5, 2016.
A Common Suicide Squad deal is now official. The DC Entertainment project has been in development since 2009. However, things started picking up in 2014 when David Ayer was announced as director. The action film will start shooting in Toronto, Canada in August 2015.
Common, who won the Oscar for best original song earlier this year, is joining a cast that includes Will Smith (Deadshot), Jared Leto (The Joker), Margot Robbie (Harley Quinn) and Viola Davis (Amanda Waller). Cara Delevingne, Joel Kinnaman, and Scott Eastwood are also part of the star-studded cast. Here is the official synopsis for the movie:
A secret government agency run by Amanda Waller, named A.R.G.U.S creates a task force comprised of super villains. They call it: the Suicide Squad because sometimes… they don’t come back. They are assigned to execute dangerous tasks in exchange for shorter prison sentences.
Excited fans cannot wait to find out more details about the rapper’s involvement in the flick. Rumors have the singer playing antiheroes – Bronze Tiger or Black Spider. John Stewart (Green Lantern) is also a possibility for the “Glory” artist. After his performance in the critically-acclaimed Selma, the “Go!” emcee became a hot commodity in Hollywood. He is featured in Liam Neeson‘s latest action film called Run All Night, which premiered in March.
This week was big in announcements for Common. The Chicago native will be working on Rob Reiner‘s next directorial venture titled Being Charlie. The project is currently being filmed in Salt Lake City, Utah. Nick Robinson and Morgan Saylor have also signed on to the independent feature.
Lee Daniels, who is the creator of Fox’s hit show Empire, recently stated that Common would appear in Season 2.
