Ashanti on Nelly split: I was betrayed. In a new interview on The Meredith Vieira Show, singer Ashanti opened up about her split from rapper Nelly after 10 years of dating.
Ashanti on Nelly split: I accept responsibilities, but I was betrayed. Appearing on The Meredith Vieira Show Friday, Ashanti spoke about her failed romance with Nelly.
The pair dated on and off for more than 10 years before calling it quits in 2012. The diva stated that Nelly had trust issues and more or less confirmed that he was cheating on her with few video vixens. The 34-year-old entertainer said:
“I think sometimes when people have their own insecurities, it allows them to act out of character.”
The “Foolish” artist went on to add :
“I’ve been betrayed. You have to grow up and accept responsibilities for the things that you do.”
When asked to elaborate, she said:
“I’m not a big fan of people being cowards. I think it’s really important to know yourself and understand what you want and get it.”
Last year, she talked about the split by explaining that she was partly to blame because she took him for granted. She told a New York radio station:
“As a woman, when a man is out doing their thing, a woman is not taking everything so serious, even though the guy might be like, ‘I’m serious,’He was very, very genuine and very, very sincere. I will give him that. From the start, I was leery.”
Ashanti later added that when she was ready to get serious and start preparing for marriage, Nelly was no longer interested in being with her. She revealed:
“That whole situation…If people were to know the truth, the truth is more bizarre than the perception…The truth of me and him is way more bizarre than what the perception is.”
Despite the sad ending of her romance, she does not regret meeting Nelly.
