ASAP Yams’ death at age 26 has many fans of the rap collective A$AP Mob or ASAP Mob mourning. According to unconfirmed reports, ASAP Yams, whose real name was Steven Rodriguez, and who founded ASAP Mob died on Sunday due to a drug overdose.
ASAP Yams’ death at such a young age has many wondering: Was there anything that his entourage could have done to save him? On Sunday, rap music fans were shocked and saddened after the hashtag RIP ASAP Yams started trending on Twitter.
ASAP Yams, whose real name was Steven Rodriguez, died at the age of 26. Mr Steven Rodriguez was the founder of A$AP Mob or ASAP Mob, the rap collective’s members include, ASAP Bari, A$AP Illz, and ASAP Rocky.
ASAP Yams born to a Dominican mother and a Puerto Rican father, was raised in Harlem, New York; he created the ASAP Mob in the mid-2000s and had always explained that his goal was to create a new path for his rappers, not steal people like Jay Z and Kanye West‘s style, flow, or thunder.
The man behind ASAP Worldwide records, explained that he wanted to do more than just make music, he was hoping to be a trendsetter who could influence East and West coasts stars. He explained:
“We wanted to become big, but we didn’t want to do it by hopping on somebody else’s wave. We wanted to come in the game with our own wave.”
According to several sources, ASAP Yams’ death was caused by a drug overdose. The music mogul was always open about his battle with drugs. After a stint in rehab, ASAP Yams said in 2013:
“I got to chill.It’s not a good look up there in the office. They’re not gonna have any faith.”
A$AP Rocky, who is mourning the loss of his friend and mentor, tweeted:
“R.I.P YAMS, I LOVE YOU BROTHER.”
A$AP Mob member A$AP Ferg tweeted the following message about ASAP Yams:
“You will be missed Bro. We done touched a lot of ground together, landed on a lot of different soil!!! You will always be loved & your spirit will live on!!! #asapmob #asapferg #asapworldwide #yams.”
