Anne Hathaway at 32 is already too old for some roles in the movie industry. Hathaway covers the October 2015 issue of Glamour UK, and she opened up about ageism in Hollywood.
Anne Hathaway is addressing the thorny topic of ageism in Hollywood in a new revealing interview with Glamour UK. Although the critically-acclaimed actress is pointing out the problem, she is not about to go on a crusade against the system because she benefited from it ten years ago. The Interstellar star thinks ageism, although not right, is part of the game and she is OK with it.
Here is what Hathaway had to say about some roles going to younger actresses:
I can’t complain about it because I benefited from it. When I was in my early twenties, parts would be written for women in their fifties and I would get them. And now I’m in my early thirties and I’m like, ‘Why did that 24 year old get that part?’ I was that 24 year old once, I can’t be upset about it, it’s the way things are. All I can do right now is think that thankfully you have built up perhaps a little bit of cachet and can tell stories that interest you and if people go to see them you’ll be allowed to make more.
Hathaway’s latest movie, The Intern, a comedy starring Robert De Niro and Rene Russo tackles ageism in the workplace. The Brooklyn, New York native portrays a young CEO, who launches a senior outreach program at her fashion based e-commerce company. De Niro plays the intern and fans expect hilarity to ensue. The Intern will premiere on September 25. In recent years, actors like Russell Crowe, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Amy Schumer, Emma Thompson and Helen Mirren have all made interesting remarks about aging in the entertainment industry.
During her chat with Glamour UK, Hathaway also stated that she is a huge Taylor Swift fan. She shared:
She just seems to be following her heart. I met her – I hope it’s OK to say this – when she and Jake [Gyllenhaal] were together. She was 20 at the time, and we hung out one night. I was like, ‘You are a magnificent creature.’ She was on fire and I’ve watched her become this force of nature.
