5 safest cities in the world have been revealed by the Economist Intelligence Unit. A large group of experts looked at 50 cities and took into account four elements – digital security, health security, infrastructure safety and personal safety, to proclaim that Tokyo won the top spot on the Safe Cities Index 2015, while Jakarta ranked at the bottom of the list.
The Economist Intelligence Unit, sponsored by NEC, has released the Safe Cities Index 2015, better known as the 5 safest cities in the world list, after zooming in on 50 cities. In their lengthy report, the team of experts, which include Sarah Murray, James Chambers, Amie Nagano and Takato Mori, revealed that they used the following elements to compose the annual safest cities list, digital security like cyber security, the frequency of identity theft, health, infrastructure and personal safety. The group wrote:
“The report is based on an index composed of more than 40 quantitative and qualitative indicators. These indicators are split across four thematic categories: digital security; health security; infrastructure safety; and personal safety. Every city in the Index is scored across these four categories.”
They also conducted extensive interviews with international figures like Yoichi Masuzoe, governor of Tokyo, and Patrick Otellini, chief resilience officer of the City and County of San Francisco. They also worked with Brian Quinn, adviser at the Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment (Cabe) at the UK Design Council and Mr Andrew Smyth, professor of civil engineering and engineering mechanics at Columbia University.
All the data collected lead the team to name Tokyo, the capital of Japan, as the safest city in the world. In 2014, the honor went to Melbourne. The Japanese city took the title despite it being the most densely populated on earth with 38 million people.
Coming in at number two is another Asian city, Singapore. Another Japanese city, Osaka, took number three. Despite being famous for drugs and prostitution, Amsterdam managed to be in the top 5.
